Omey Island (Irish Iomaí) is located near Clifden and can be reached over a wide sandy beach at low tide. This is also possible by car, as a "fairway" is well marked - but one thinks "just do not stop" when crossing.
There is a lake and a sacred spring on the island. The island is considered a place of worship for Saint Feichin of Sligo, who founded a monastery here, where he died in 664 AD.
The island has been suffering from population decline for a long time and you can only meet a few inhabitants in the beautiful landscape. There is a lot to discover. In 2014, for example, Storm a 6000 year old coastal dwelling on the western and northern coasts.
