Batur is an active stratovolcano with a height of around 1700 m and lies in the center of two concentric calderas in Bangli County on the Indonesian island of Bali.
We had stayed overnight in a small guesthouse in Penelokan and descended into the caldera the next morning. After a long hike to the foot of the volcanic cone, the subsequent climb to the volcanic cone offered magnificent views.
Halfway there we were joined by an Indonesian woman who managed the steep passages with a vessel on her head - we were impressed.
