The approximately 2,300 meter high Bromo stratovolcano is located on the Indonesian island of Java and is one of the most active volcanoes here. Its name is derived from the Hindu god Brahma and thus indicates the importance that the Tenger people in East Java attach to this volcanic elemental force.
We set off before sunrise to climb it and crossed the wide plain on foot to the crater cone. Here the landscape had already created a primal impression and dinosaurs appearing between the smaller volcanic cones would hardly have surprised us.
The ascent in the already noticeably thinner air was certainly difficult, but the view into the volcanic cone became an unforgettable experience and made Nietzsche's well-known quote become reality just for a brief moment: "If you look into an abyss for a long time, the abyss also looks in you in"
