North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is Germany’s most populous federal state, with its capital in Düsseldorf and its largest city Cologne. Located in western Germany, it borders Belgium and the Netherlands. The region is marked by a strong industrial history, especially in the Ruhr area, which today is undergoing structural change and is known for culture, science, and services. Beyond its urban centers, the state also features upland landscapes such as the Sauerland and the Eifel. Culturally, it is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Cologne Cathedral and the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen.
