Via the European Route 6 (E6) we drive along the border river between Finland and Norway, the Kárášjohka, to the main settlement areas of the Sami people in Norway. Ice floes are still drifting on the raging river and mountains of ice and snow are piling up meters high on its banks.
We stay overnight in the town of Karasjok, the seat of the Sami Parliament Sameting. Here the Kárášjohka flows leisurely through the small town before it becomes the sometimes raging border river in the narrower passages between Norway and Finland.
Ekkerøy is one of the oldest fishing villages on the Varangerfjord and belongs to the municipality of Vadsø, whose capital is around 15 km away. It is a bird paradise and the suffix "øy" means that it was originally an island that offered shelter and therefore good chances of survival for the diverse bird life. Now the area is connected to the Varanger Peninsula by a narrow isthmus and migratory birds also like to winter here.

Until 1794 and after 1848 the island was called Île Bourbon - in between it was called Île Bonaparte under Naples. The black and white photo shows impressions of the Creole population on the beach of St. Gilles les Bains. Creoles denote colonial groups formed by colonialism.
