When we arrived from Alta, the Lyngen Alps offered us a wonderful panorama during the day and ideal conditions for photographing the northern lights at night.

From North Cape to Alta

The E69, which joins the E6 to Alta, is a dream road with spectacular views. At the end of May the roads are clear but the snow-capped hills and mountains give a wintry impression.

Occasionally reindeer appear who have already scraped small patches of grass under the snow to graze. It goes a long way along the Porsangerfjord. Small islands with few houses suddenly appear behind the curves and tunnels of the country road.

You can often go 80 km/h here and we make good progress until the road gets busier when we arrive in Alta and we are happy about the many cyclists.

North Cape Horn and Kirkeporten

The rock formation of Kirkeporten is a highlight that is easy to hike from Skarsvåg. Once you have reached this stretch of coast, Kirkeporten offers a very special view: through it you can see over the Mefjord to the North Cape plateau, about six kilometers away, with its famous North Cape Horn.

From Karasjok to North Cape

From Karasjok you first take the E6 to Olderfjord, where you change to the European route E69, which leads directly to the North Cape.

Bird life at the village of Ekkerøy

Ekkerøy is one of the oldest fishing villages on the Varangerfjord and belongs to the municipality of Vadsø, whose capital is around 15 km away. It is a bird paradise and the suffix "øy" means that it was originally an island that offered shelter and therefore good chances of survival for the diverse bird life. Now the area is connected to the Varanger Peninsula by a narrow isthmus and migratory birds also like to winter here.

Ceavccageađge - 8.000 B.C.

One of the highest concentrations of archaeological sites in the Nordic countries is at Ceavccageađge (Mortensnes in Norwegian) in Varanger. Ten thousand years as a meeting place for hunters, fishermen and traders have left traces of settlements in the landscape, some monumental but many often small and easily overlooked. A cairn is not always just a cairn.

Vadsø at the Barents Sea

Vadsø is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean on the Barents Sea (Norwegian: Barentshavet), which was named after the Dutch navigator Willem Barents. Vadsø is a gateway to Varangerhalvøya National Park, whose wild expanses are unparalleled. We took accommodation right on the sea access in Annijoki at the Varangerfjord close to Vadsø and were the only guests in the house at this time of year (May). The Barents adventure began as soon as we checked into the locked house, because there was no staff and the situation was only clarified when we called the owner.

Via the Cirque de Mafate to the Col du Taïbit

From Marla there is a steep climb through the Cirque de Mafate to the Col du Taïbit (2081 m) from where you can see the town of Cilaos in the heart of Reunion.

Early in the morning we left La Nouvelle for Marla (1629 m). We wanted to spend the second night in the Mafate in the secluded mountain village. Again, the path was fantastic. It went up and down, along streams and partly through forests. Seeing the massive caldera under a blue sky was impressive, especially as we had had few distant views as we made our way through the cloud forests off La Nouvelle.

A hike through the gorges and over the ridges of the "Cirque de Mafate" is overwhelming. We started in the morning on the north side of the huge caldera of the Piton des Neiges, crossed the Col de Fourche (1,946 m) and finally reached the small mountain town of La Nouvelle (1,450 m) before nightfall, although it was hidden in thick fog. Our surprise was all the greater in the morning when we were able to continue the hike to the next mountain town called Marla under a blue sky and bright sunshine. The road to La Nouvell was beautiful.

New Year at the Arctic Circle
