The South Island (Te Waipounamu) is the larger of New Zealand’s two main islands but less densely populated than the North Island. Its main city is Christchurch. The island is dominated by the Southern Alps, including the country’s highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook, as well as dramatic fjords such as Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park. The South Island is renowned for its wild nature, glaciers, lakes, and outdoor adventures, making it a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts.
