The North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) is one of New Zealand’s two main islands and home to most of the country’s population. The capital Wellington and the largest city Auckland are located here. The island is characterized by volcanic landscapes such as those in Tongariro National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), geothermal areas around Rotorua, fertile plains, and coastal scenery. It is the cultural heartland of the Māori, whose traditions are visible throughout the island. The North Island combines urban vibrancy with unique natural beauty.
