Sandoy is one of the 18 main Faroe Islands, located south of Streymoy. Its name means “Sand Island,” reflecting its relatively gentle landscape with sandy beaches, which contrasts with the typically steep and rocky terrain of the neighboring islands. The main village is Sandur, noted for its historic church and ancient settlement traces. Sandoy is sparsely populated and primarily agricultural, known for its tranquil character. It is connected by ferry and, since 2023, also by an undersea tunnel to Streymoy.
