Ystad is a coastal town in southern Sweden, located in the region of Skåne (Scania). It is famous for its well-preserved medieval old town with half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets. A major landmark is the former Franciscan monastery dating back to the 13th century. Ystad gained international recognition through Henning Mankell’s Wallander crime novels, which are set and filmed in the town. It is also an important ferry port with connections to Bornholm and Poland, and a popular tourist destination in southern Sweden.
