The Basque Country (Euskadi / País Vasco) is an autonomous community in northern Spain, bordering France and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Vitoria-Gasteiz, while Bilbao and San Sebastián (Donostia) serve as cultural hubs. The Basque Country is known for its distinct language Basque (Euskara), rich traditions, and modern architecture, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The region combines mountains, coastal scenery, and a unique culinary culture featuring pintxos and Basque wines.

Long exposures on the Bay of Biscay

On the Bay of Biscay in the Basque Country there are beautiful beaches but also wild coastal landscapes. On the Barrikaka beach near Barrika, the waves break on the various rock formations and, if the weather is suitable, the roaring spray can be photographically transformed into a fine mist.

Gaztelugatxe in Biscay

The island of Gaztelugatxe in the Bay of Biscay served as a retreat for the Templars in the 13th century and as a filming location for the creators of Game of Thrones.
