Sibiu (German: Hermannstadt) is a city in Transylvania, Romania, and one of the country’s most important cultural centers. Founded in the 12th century by the Transylvanian Saxons, the city has preserved its German-speaking heritage for centuries. Its old town, with squares, bridges, and townhouses, is exceptionally well preserved and was named European Capital of Culture in 2007. Notable landmarks include the Great Square (Piața Mare), the Bridge of Lies, and the Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral. Today, Sibiu represents a vibrant blend of multicultural history and a modern creative scene.
