Vardø is the easternmost town in Norway, located on a small island in the Varangerfjord, connected to the mainland by an undersea tunnel. The town has a long and eventful history, serving as an important Arctic trading and military outpost since the Middle Ages. Key landmarks include Vardøhus Fortress, one of the world’s northernmost fortresses, and the Steilneset Memorial, commemorating the victims of witch trials in the region. Today, Vardø is a hub for fishing, birdwatching, and a gateway to Arctic nature exploration.
