Varanger is a region in the far northeast of Norway, in Troms og Finnmark County, located along the Varangerfjord. It is considered a gateway to the Arctic and is especially famous for its unique nature and rich wildlife. Varanger is a birdwatcher’s paradise, hosting numerous Arctic and migratory bird species, including puffins, eiders, and rare birds of prey. Its landscapes are characterized by vast tundra, rugged coastlines, and Sami culture. Varanger is also one of the best places in Norway to experience the Northern Lights during winter.

One of the highest concentrations of archaeological sites in the Nordic countries is at Ceavccageađge (Mortensnes in Norwegian) in Varanger. Ten thousand years as a meeting place for hunters, fishermen and traders have left traces of settlements in the landscape, some monumental but many often small and easily overlooked. A cairn is not always just a cairn.
