Stavanger is a city in southwestern Norway and the administrative center of Rogaland County. It is considered Norway’s “oil capital,” as the country’s petroleum and gas industry is centered here. The old town, Gamle Stavanger, with its white wooden houses, is one of the best-preserved historic wooden settlements in Europe. Stavanger is also known for its Cathedral (Domkirke), the oldest in Norway, and as a gateway for excursions to the famous Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) overlooking the Lysefjord.
