Leiden is a historic university city in the Dutch province of South Holland, near The Hague. The city is famous for its canals, windmills, and well-preserved old town houses. In 1575, the Netherlands’ oldest university was founded here, which still holds international renown today. The city’s most famous native is painter Rembrandt van Rijn, whose legacy is strongly present in Leiden. With its museums, botanical gardens, and proximity to the North Sea, Leiden is an important cultural hub.
