Kaunas is Lithuania’s second-largest city, located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. It served as the country’s capital during the interwar period and remains an important cultural, economic, and academic center. The old town of Kaunas features Gothic, Baroque, and Classical architecture, including the Town Hall, Kaunas Castle, and many churches. Kaunas is also renowned for its vibrant art scene and was named a European Capital of Culture in 2022.
