Venice is a city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region. Situated in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, it is world-famous for its canals, bridges, and palaces. Landmarks include St. Mark’s Square with St. Mark’s Basilica, the Campanile, and the Doge’s Palace. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Venice was a powerful maritime republic and played a key role in trade between Europe and the East.
