Macedonia is a historical region on the Balkan Peninsula, whose territory today is divided among several countries: the largest part is North Macedonia, with additional areas in Greece (Region of Macedonia) and Bulgaria. The region is historically significant as the birthplace of Alexander the Great and the seat of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon. Today, North Macedonia is an independent state with its capital in Skopje, while the Greek region of Macedonia, with cities such as Thessaloniki, is an important cultural and economic area.
Our good friend Max died on March 20th, 2022 in his adopted country of Macedonia. We received the news completely surprisingly and unexpectedly. Max and I had been in contact almost weekly for the last 20 years and when I asked how he was doing via telegram, his granddaughter Maria answered me with the sad news of his death.
