Tartu is Estonia’s second-largest city and is considered the country’s intellectual and cultural capital. Situated on the Emajõgi River, it is renowned for the historic University of Tartu, founded in 1632 and one of the oldest in Northern Europe. Tartu has a vibrant student atmosphere, with numerous museums, theaters, and festivals. The historic old town, with the Town Hall Square, neoclassical buildings, and St. John’s Church, reflects the city’s long history. In 2024, Tartu was designated as a European Capital of Culture.
