Rügen is Germany’s largest island, located in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is famous for its striking chalk cliffs in Jasmund National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), as well as for long sandy beaches, tree-lined avenues, and traditional seaside resorts such as Binz, Sellin, and Göhren. Rügen is connected to the mainland by the Rügendamm causeway and the Rügen Bridge. The island is culturally enriched by manor houses, castles, and festivals, while its natural landscapes include beech forests and lagoon areas.
