Bonn is located on the Rhine River in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and served as the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1990. Even after reunification, Bonn remained an important political center, today as a Federal City hosting several ministries and federal institutions. The city is also the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven, home to the Beethoven House and numerous museums along the Museum Mile. Surrounded by the Rhine and the Siebengebirge hills, Bonn offers both cultural and natural attractions.
