The Shetland Islands are located in the North Atlantic between Scotland, Norway, and the Faroe Islands, and politically belong to Scotland (United Kingdom). They consist of over 100 islands, about 15 of which are inhabited. The archipelago is famous for its rugged coastline, seabird colonies, Shetland ponies, and its rich Norse and Scottish heritage. The capital, Lerwick, hosts the annual Up Helly Aa Viking festival.
