The Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) are an island chain off the west coast of Scotland, politically part of the United Kingdom. They comprise more than 100 islands, about 15 of which are inhabited. The largest islands are Lewis and Harris, North Uist, South Uist, and Barra. The Outer Hebrides are famous for their rugged landscapes, Celtic culture, Gaelic as a spoken language, and historic sites such as the Callanish Stones.
