The Kuril Islands are an archipelago in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, stretching from Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula to Japan’s Hokkaidō. Comprising more than 50 volcanic islands, they are known for their rugged landscapes, active volcanoes, and rich wildlife. Politically, the southern Kurils are disputed between Russia and Japan.
