The ten German Halligen are grouped in a circle around the island of Pellworm. These "young" islands only exist in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. Their land masses protrude a few meters from the sea and are regularly flooded by strong floods (colloquial: "Landunter"). Their residents live in houses on artificial embankments, the terps. These are high enough to withstand "normal" storm surges.
The Halligen can be reached in different ways. On the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor, also known as Lüttmoor, 18 people live in four terps on an area of 1.9 km². There is even a primary and secondary school (the smallest school in Germany) and a restaurant. This Hallig is connected to the mainland at Beltringharder Koog via a Lorendamm dam.
The Hamburg Hallig, on the other hand, can be reached directly on foot, bike or even by car from Sönke-Nissen-Koog. Bicycles can be rented on the dike or a ticket can be bought for the journey by car. The restaurant on the Hallig is a popular excursion destination and you can watch interesting birds along the bank fortifications - we even saw eider ducks here.
