Elderly Tibetan woman at the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. The trip to Tibet in 1993 was difficult. We had found the address of a hotel in Chongqing in China where entry visas for Tibet could be obtained. There they offered us a document in a hotel room for Chinese, which should contain a visa for 7 days: Cost 3,000 DM. In addition, only cash payments in FEC were accepted. We refused and went straight to an office of the CAAC, the Chinese airline, and bought two very cheap plane tickets to Lhasa in the hope of being able to buy a visa when entering the Lhasa airport. When we arrived in Lhasa, however, there were no controls and so we suddenly entered Tibet, where we were supposed to get to know amazing people and wonderful spiritual places for 14 days.
