Holography

The three-dimensional effect of holograms is particularly impressive when the viewer can move around and see the holographic motif from several sides. If you photograph holograms, you inevitably only depict one viewing angle and get a two-dimensional impression.

For this article, we mounted holograms on a rotating body and let them rotate slowly around the vertical axis when illuminated with parallel light. The holographic motif was recorded as HD video with a Nikon D850.

At the end of the 1990s, the Holography Museum was closed by Matthias Lauk and its approximately 350 exhibits were looking for new owners. In order to be able to assess holographic art, the view must not be obscured by 3D animations, stereoscopic images or simulated pseudo-3D effects with red-green orthogonal glasses. Otherwise the careless assessment of the ignorant takes place too quickly, one is on the level of souvenir articles.

In October 1982 I published an article entitled "Laser technology - breakthrough successful" as the specialist editor of "Idea - Das Magazin für Ingenieure". Since holography was one of my areas of specialization during my studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum, this interesting and future-oriented technology should of course not be missing. This example nicely shows the special effect of rainbow holograms: If you tilt them around the horizontal axis, the photo runs through the spectral colors. If you move them around the vertical axis, they show the three-dimensionality of the recorded object. This opens up many possibilities for art projects, since with this method you not only have three representable dimensions but also colors for designing the art object.

This post shows a white light hologram that was recorded with an argon laser. A flashlight with almost parallel light is sufficient for viewing.

White light holograms are generated with coherent laser light (here an argon laser), but they meet lower coherence conditions when viewing. The recorded objects show up in parallel light, so that lasers can be dispensed with. This makes them very suitable for artistic projects.

Is there really all the information of a recorded motif in every fragment of a hologram? Rainbow holograms are a special type of white light holograms. The technique for generating rainbow holograms was developed in 1968 by Dr. Stephen A. Benton designed. Rainbow holography uses a horizontal slit and / or cylindrical lenses to remove vertical parallax in the output image. This reduces the spectral blurring while maintaining the third dimension in the observation. If you look at a rainbow hologram that is moved around the horizontal axis, you only see the change in colors.
